The above ad for Subaru, titled "Best Friend," embodies Jean Kilbourne's view that "[i]n the world of advertising, lovers grow cold, spouses [and pets] grow old, children grow up and away – but possessions stay with us and never change. "  The message here is clear, buy this Subaru and it will be the one constant in your life . . . and it really will last for twenty years.  We don't, of course, truly believe either claim, but the ad works on us nevertheless because of the emotional appeal.  The twenty-something, urban, socially conscious consumer (Subaru's targeted consumer group) is forward-thinking enough to understand his/her own mortality, so the message Subaru sells is an effective one (whether we want to admit so or not).
